The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multi campus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland - School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. Located next to the University of Maryland Medical Center with a walkway connecting the two facilities, the medical center maintains an active affiliation with the University in the sharing of staff, resources, and technology. Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center is the acute medical and surgical care facility for the VA Maryland Health Care System and offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and primary care services. As one of the most modern health care facilities in the country, the medical center offers veterans state-of-the-art medical technology, clinical services and research programs.
The Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) is seeking an Associate Director for Research (AD/Research). They will be responsible for managing the overall research program of the GRECC. The development of programs in this center has a regional as well as national impact upon the delivery of care to geriatric patients. With the position devoted to research and the great diversity of research approaches, techniques and goals, this managerial position is an extremely complex and demanding task. GRECC research reflects a balance program of aging research that has components in the pre-clinical, clinical, health services (including implementation science) and rehabilitation realms of research. GRECC research activity should strive to be a blend of at least three of these realms, seeking pathways by which more basic research can be used to improve health and health care for older Veterans. The Associate Director will seek to build and grow the GRECC as a center of excellence in the field of aging research and provide a stimulating research environment with strong capabilities for researchers on aging and a stimulating learning experience for students and fellows.
The GRECC AD/Research is in the Baltimore VA Medical Center and requires occasional travel away from the duty station for local meetings, and infrequent distant meetings and conferences. Local travel between VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) sites, as the Baltimore GRECC has physical space and staffing in multiple VAMHCS locations.
Qualifications:
Must hold an appropriate doctoral level degree
Be at least 5/8 FTEE devoted to VA and at least 5/8ths FTEE devoted to GRECC
Advanced training, extensive experience or certification in gerontology or geriatrics
Must have demonstrated the ability to manage and supervise positions of administrative staff, nursing, and other physicians.
Demonstrated teaching ability is required as the physician will be responsible for education of medical students, residents, and fellows.
Physician must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Maryland licensure is preferred due to affiliation with the University of Maryland Medical Center and the training of residents.
