Purpose Statement / Position Summary
Members of the MemorialCare Epic job family work side by side with our end users to install the Epic software, help lead and manage workflow/software changes, and ultimately transform the way that MemorialCare provides healthcare. MemorialCare's Epic Team develops creative strategies to achieve common end goals while collaborating with our end users.
The Principal Epic Architect provides comprehensive technical and operational direction and support for Epic. They ensure completeness of system architecture by adequately addressing all pertinent concerns of system stakeholders. They work closely with business operations and IS analysts to understand business requirements and propose IS solutions that are reliable, maintainable, supportable and scalable for MemorialCare’s growing health system and to meet strategic goals. Principal Epic Architects ensure integrity of the system’s architecture by connecting various views of stakeholders and reconciling concerns. They consider practicality and fitness for purpose in determining architecture to develop. Principal Epic Architects work to maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and best in class trends and practices to assist in planning new functionality deployment strategies.
Throughout their many undertakings, they may be requested to take on the role of project leader on special assignments. Thus, it is essential for them to establish and maintain relationships to achieve transformational change across all lines of resources from line staff to physicians to wide-ranging leaders.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Propose and lead Epic improvement programs
- Seek out newly released Epic functionality that MemorialCare can benefit from
- Consult with Epic application project team owners to harmonize systems with the enterprise solution architecture
- Seeks out Epic system best practices and configurations of system build that support MemorialCare goals
- Facilitate collaboration and continuous communication with parties both within and outside of the Epic team
- Apply in-depth knowledge of application(s) to ensure effective and optimal use of Epic providing recommendations on how the system can remain efficient and economical
- Stay aware of current and emerging data technologies and trends, and Epic changing functionality to provide advice to MemorialCare based on these modifications
- Lead internal projects providing regular status reports and escalating as necessary
- Maximize the maintainability of Epic, keeping customization at a minimum
- Act as user liaison between professional departments and Information Systems

- Provides the highest level of functional Epic expertise in addressing problems of system integration, compatibility, and performance in any level of a multi-faceted environment.
- Proposes and leads Epic improvement programs, taking responsibility for the quality and appropriateness of the work performed and the realization of measurable business benefits.
- Seeks out newly released Epic functionality that can be utilized by MemorialCare. Evaluates and undertakes impact analysis on major system design options and proposes implementation timelines and models for use of the new functionality.
- Provides a unique source of specialized Epic expertise that can serve the needs of other organizations; provides wide ranging Epic application support for staff to maximize organizational Epic investments.
- Seeks out Epic system best practices and configurations of system build that support MemorialCare goals.
- Consults with all Epic application project team owners to harmonize systems with the enterprise solution architecture and identify when it is necessary to modify the solution architecture to accommodate project needs.
- Facilitates collaboration and continuous communication with parties both within and outside of the Epic team; responsible for ongoing communication with parties external to the organization, which may include customers or vendors.
- Works to influence others to accept Epic views as well as accept new Epic concepts, practices, and approaches. May conduct briefings with Epic and IS senior leaders.
- Applies in-depth knowledge of application to ensure effective and optimal use of current application, incorporating refinements based on organizational changes or process improvements.
- Acts as primary technical and subject matter expert addressing problems of system integration and overall compatibility. Drives precise project execution through consistent planning and communication.
- Identifies and resolves complex problems and issues associated with enterprise wide applications to ensure high levels of application availability and user satisfaction.
- Stays abreast of current and emerging data technologies and trends and advises on how they can be used to support business and technology objectives. Builds prototypes to determine feasibility when warranted.
- Identifies problem situations and considers all perspectives in terms of scope and consequences. Recommends refinements in applications based on organizational changes or process improvements.
- Maximizes the maintainability of Epic, keeping customization at a minimum so that upgrades can be done efficiently and economically.
- Leads small and large IS projects by setting team direction, coordinating activities across different organizational functions, evaluating progress towards objectives, managing customer relationships and expectations, and taking corrective actions when deviations stray from plans as necessary.
- Acts as user liaison between professional departments and Information Systems, providing high-level customer service, troubleshooting, and documentation materials for Epic, including in depth and precise investigation and documentation of future-state operational specifications around Epic functionality.
- Serves as a source of support and a positive role model through mentoring and training junior resources on build, workflow processes, testing, and implementation processes. Functions as a source of assistance and a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors.
- Initiates department process improvement; identifies, designs and implements process, including outline of maintenance plan.
