An established laboratory in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology is seeking an RAI with the desired qualification/experience:
- Animal handling and colony management in a biology, immunology, and/or molecular biology research laboratory
- Desire to learn one or more of the following new techniques:
tissue culture techniques: sterile methods and related methods: flow cytometry and flow sorting
molecular biology techniques: elementary DNA isolation, cloning, gene transfer and related methods; elementary protein techniques such as recombinant protein expression in one or more systems (bacteria, yeast, insect cells, mammalian cells), immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, and related techniques
protein chemistry techniques: affinity chromatography, liquid chromatography, and other specialized methods used in our laboratory
- Some experience in a biology, immunology, and/or molecular biology laboratory is desirable
This Research Assistant I (RA-I) will have the primary responsibility of handling and maintaining our mouse colonies consisting of inbred and genetically altered knockout and transgenic mouse strains. This primary responsibility will entail tail DNA genotyping, setting up breeding to obtain desired animals of specific genetic background, and other related activities.
Additional job responsibilities of this RA-I position will involve assisting laboratory members--i.e., the PI, students, fellows, research faculty, & staff scientists, with experiments under supervision.

- Quickly learn handling, breeding, and genotyping of mice
- Quickly learn mouse colony management and record keeping
- Understand and follow experimental protocols for tail DNA genotyping, setting up breeding, tissue culture, and others as needed
- Ensure mouse line/s are generated in a timely fashion and available for experiments
- Record, compile, interpret, and communicate results from mouse genotyping appropriately
- Provide appropriate written documentation of mouse genotypes
- Follow University safety protocols as the work in the laboratory may involve the use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogens
- Prepare buffers and reagents as needed; this will require calculating molarity, and serial dilutions, and other similar tasks
- Read all equipment manuals; use them according to manufacturer instructions
- Prepare, operate, and troubleshoot equipment used in experimental procedures
- Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and University guidelines
- Maintain sterile conditions as required in a BioSafety Level (BSL)-2 laboratory
- Demonstrate an understanding of acceptable procedures and techniques
