As a Physician Assistant (PA) in Surgical Services at the Grand Junction Health Care System, you will provide and coordinate medical care for assigned patients (inpatient and/or outpatient), including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans and providing follow-up care. Duties include; but, are not limited to the following: Clinical Duties: Authorized to practice with defined levels of autonomy and exercise independent medical decision making within his/her Scope of Practice. Collaborate with Physicians, daily, to discuss any difficult or unusual clinical management issues. Authorized to write medical orders on patients assigned to the Surgery Service in any patient setting. Record entries including; but not limited to, medical histories, physical examinations, progress notes and service consults. Prescribe medications, refill previously prescribed medications and supplies in the inpatient/outpatient settings. Order diagnostic studies and testing including EKG, radiographic or imaging studies, MRIs, CT Scans, providing preliminary results. Order or obtain lab specimens. Order ancillary services such as Pharmacy, Social Services, Prosthetics, respiratory care, rehab services, etc. May order and start intravenous solutions and administer IV medications including blood products. Perform surgical and therapeutic procedures including; but, not limited to, suturing of lacerations, obtaining biopsies, intravascular catheter placement, intra-aortic balloon pump and temporary pacemaker wires for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Assist in procedures in the OR such as closing or assisting the primary surgeon in operative procedures. Basic Life Support in accordance with CPR standards. Utilize ACLS with current protocols to include defibrillation and/or cardioversion. Clinical Research. Facilitate professional training and education of health profession trainees. Administrative duties: Address scheduling and peri-operative patient assessments and recommendations both within the facility as well as VISN and regional treatment locations, including addressing transition from non-VA facilities. Coordinate referrals, scheduling and evaluation of veterans at the VA WCHCS, outside VA's and private sector referrals of veterans in Surgery Service.
