This position is in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service of the VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System. The incumbent functions as a Medical Technologist - Generalist at the Castle Point Campus in the Clinical Laboratory Service and will be required to rotate within the clinical laboratory departments on as need basis as a generalist. Incumbent may be required to work at the Montrose campus from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm and be on call in need arises. Lists the major duties and responsibilities of the position: The generalist medical technologist rotates with other generalists on a regular basis through the above-mentioned areas. He/She also works off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need. The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist - Generalist include but are not limited to the following: Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrective action. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports. Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs. Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures. Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e. history, medications) to verify results. Perform instrument validations when necessary. Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly. Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, maintaining proper records. Takes appropriate action to identify discrepancies, unusual and erroneous results. Conducts investigation for corrections and problem solving. Accepts referrals of any questions or observations from less experienced lab personnel. Develops protocols for new instruments, including writing procedures, and establishing protocols for running of the analyzer. Includes development of Quality Control for the testing methods, calculating mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation to determine clinical significance. Participates in continuing education programs, as an instructor and/or student. Maintains laboratory analyzers by performing linearity's, correlation studies, parallel testing, calibrations, and appropriate maintenance on the Beckman Power Express and Stockyard. Professional knowledge of the established principles, concepts, methods, skills and performance of the full range of specialized tests. This may include laboratory math and statistics sufficient to establish Quality Control, troubleshoot procedures, and equipment. This enables proficiency in correlating test results to implement new procedures. Knowledge of significance of certain clinical and physiological conditions sufficient enough to assess and correlate patient data. Understand reference standards, medical legal requirements, regulatory and accrediting agency requirements governing the laboratory in regard to patient testing. Knowledge of instructing techniques and practices necessary to instruct students in basic principles, including specialized methods of various areas of Medical Technology. Knowledge and understanding of laboratory equipment, and their methodologies. Incumbent will be required to perform Contracting duties as needed.
