The Supervisory Social Worker (Geriatrics and Extended Care) has oversight and supervision of social workers in Social Work Student Education, Palliative Care, Community Nursing Home, Community Residential Care, Community Living Centers, Hospital in Home and other geriatric aligned services. This position is located at the Audie L. Murphy VAMC in San Antonio, Texas. Duties may include but are not limited to: -Responsible for making decisions regarding work problems presented by subordinate social workers. -May make or recommend selections for supervisory and non-supervisory positions, hears group grievances and serious employee complaints, review serious disciplinary cases (i.e., those proposing suspensions and removals), and disciplinary problems involving key employees. -Responsible for suspense, quarterly, and monthly reports as required by STVHCS, VACO, etc. -Develops procedures for and ensures the implementation and achievement of the provision of social work services, to medical facility patients on inpatient and outpatient programs. -Develops and monitors standards of clinical practice/standards of care for Social Work, including development of care guidelines, manuals, and guides to professional practice. -Makes recommendations for recruitment of staff and ensures responsibilities for orientation and continuing education of staff. -Briefs management orally and in writing on a regular basis concerning matters related to Social Work Service, in order to provide information required to make effective decisions for program planning. -Takes appropriate action when indicated and ensures that copies of professional Social Work Service meeting minutes are made available for social workers. -Coordinates with Informatics the administration/file building of Vista/CPRS software packages for Social Work. -Oversees development of measurable mental health social work treatment protocols and practice models in order to facilitate the use of statistical processes and analysis tools. -Ensures that social work staff conducts assessments for case management on all OEF/OIF veterans; that staff will use the social work process (psychosocial assessment, diagnosis, and treatment) to conduct an intake health assessment or an update assessment for OEF/OIF veterans. -Monitors documentation to ensure that staff completes and follow the protocols for Suicide Risk Assessment to include completion of the PHQ-I9, CSSRS in the Mental Health Assistant, Suicide Risk Evaluation, Behavior Reports and safety planning on all patients with suicidal ideation and/or on any patient whose record is flagged "High Risk for Suicide." -Compiles and disseminates social work quality management findings, actions, and outcomes to social workers, medical center staff, and leadership personnel. -Responsibility for the preparation of reports, as assigned by the Chief, Medical Center Director, or Central Office. -Serves the Medical Center at large in a variety of capacities, such as committee assignments, investigations, personnel matters, and special projects. -Having consultative authority, the Social Work Supervisor serves as a vital professional influence and resource to Local Leadership through Social Work Service in their compliance with standards defined by accrediting organizations, such as The Joint Commission and the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (JCAHO and CARF) standards applicable to Social Work. -Maintains academic affiliations for social work practice as needed; which may include arranging and coordinating Social Work Field Practice placements at the Medical Center, as well as maintaining oversight of the Palliative Social Work Fellowship. -Consults with other Services, program managers, or care line managers on issues pertaining to Social Work ethics, ethical dilemmas in the delivery of care, and ethical issues within the larger organization. -May carry a minimal clinical caseload and manage difficult cases for line staff assigned under the incumbent's supervision. -Required to travel to offsite clinic(s)/location(s) to provide direct supervision and conduct field visits of supervisees and engage with stakeholders for the programs to which social workers, under the direct supervision of the incumbent, are matrixed.
