This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Learn more The Integrated Quality Program Manager is responsible for quality management and medication safety activities for the Pharmacy Service, and works independently under the Chief of Pharmacy and keeps the Chief apprised of trends/problems associated with their assigned activities. The primary responsibility of the Integrated Quality Program Manager is to oversee quality management. Program Management: Coordinates ongoing, proactive-processes to evaluate and improve safe medication management strategies. Manages or assists with management of data collection, analysis, and review of medication safety related events and practices, including reports of Adverse Drug Events and medication errors. Participates in root-cause analysis of significant medication errors. Examines the systems failures and human factors contributing to medication errors. Identifies the extent of the health system's adherence to published best practices and guidelines relevant to quality management and medication-use safety. Identifies opportunities for proactive change in the medication-use system suggested by published events or recommendations focused on medication-use safety. Ensure health-system adoption of modifications to the medication-use system on the basis of comparison with best practices, guidelines, published events, and recommendations. Dispensing and Distribution: Evaluates prescriber's medication orders for appropriateness, renal/hepatic dosing, drug interactions, possible allergies/adverse reactions, duplications in therapy, and verifies/finishes pending inpatient orders. Maintains adequate drug stock, inspects drug storage areas, supervises prepacking and the operation of automated dispensing equipment. Utilizes VISTA and CPRS packages to maintain complete patient medication records. Enters or finishes outpatient prescriptions for dispensing. Assists the patient care team with expedited medication delivery as needed. Education and Training: Is skilled at using both written and verbal communication techniques in teaching others. Has a superior working knowledge of information resources such as VHA directives, TJC standards, National Patient Safety Goals, ASHP recommendations, etc. Participates in the training and in-servicing of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, and other medical center personnel as required. Provides accurate and adequate orientation and explanation of policies and procedures regarding quality management protocol and initiatives to pharmacy personnel (including students and volunteers). Reviews and identifies training needs and education requirements of pharmacy employees and provides training needed to carry out the mission of the service. Research: Works with other health professionals to develop and participate in the implementation of protocols for clinical and health systems research related to pharmacy. Develops and coordinates clinical research activities and projects to benefit the Pharmacy Service. Submits articles, manuscripts, and research projects for presentation and publication locally and nationally. Serves as a mentor in the development and conduct of resident research projects including development of research questions, methodology, application to IRB, and assisting with presentation and manuscript preparation.
