The Blood Bank Supervisor works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or Manager; supervises the Blood Bank section.Assures the inventory levels of blood products; maintains CAP, CLIA, AABB, and JCAHO accrediting standards; assures that staff perform procedures according to age specific standards as associated with job-related duties; performs complex technical testing and clinical procedures; instructs new students and new staff on policies and procedures.

Â·Assures compliance with CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, AABB, infection control, safety and other regulatory standards, including privacy and security of health information (PHI).
Â·Supervise the daily operations of the Blood Bank Department.
Â·In collaboration with the Lab Director or Manager, develop and document Blood Bank policies and procedures and ensure the policies and procedures are understood, implemented and maintained by all staff employees including nursing service
Â·Writes Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) specific to a task. Provide step-by-step instructions on operation of equipment, performance of tests and criteria for accepting results.
Â·Ensures that the Blood Bank Dept. meets/exceeds all requirements of JCAHO, CAP, FDA and American Association of Blood Banks. Accompany inspectors and provide data during inspection by the above agencies as needed on behalf of the Lab Manager.
Â·Work with nursing service to coordinate policies and procedures for administration of blood and blood products.
Â·Compile QI reviews data, summarize and report. Research problems and concerns of committee.
Â·Collaborates with the Lab Director or Manager in developing and maintaining Quality Plan for Transfusion Service. Consult with pathologists, clinicians and hospital staff concerning test results, problem and special test requests.
Â·Research records for Clinical Auditor, Quality Improvement Dept. and Risk Management as needed.
Â·Maintain adequate supplies and blood product inventory, ensuring that blood products are available to fill request.
Â·Evaluate, review and recommend new or replacement of test procedures/equipment.
Â·Instruct, in-service and train all new technologists rotating through blood bank.
Â·Evaluate performance and give competency tests yearly to technologist working in blood bank.
Â·Council employees as needed on performance.
Â·Review patient results for all shifts as needed. Document, correct, and council employees on any variation from SOP.
Â·Performs blood bank procedures both manually and automated in accordance with established policy and procedures. Collaborates politely with physicians, nurses and Blood Center in various situations.
Â·Responsible for the investigation and interpretation of unexpected blood bank reactions: Recognizes need for further testing of unexpected reactions, Checks patientâ€™s history appropriately, Performs appropriate testing for investigation of unexpected results in accordance to established policy/procedures, Provides patients with appropriate components after interpretation of unexpected reactions, Communicates with pathologists, lab personnel, nurses, physicians and Blood Center in a timely and concise manner concerning problems.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or Equivalent degree.
3-5 years as a Medical Technologist, MLS, CLS or Equivalent required
