The Pharmacy Technician (Outpatient) performs a variety of complex and technical functions in the Outpatient Pharmacy, which requires application of an extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and departmental policies and procedures. The Pharmacy Technician provides various support services within the Pharmacy department at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center. Pharmacy Technicians typically carry out the full range of technical support functions The duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following The duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following: Prescription set-up and filling (includes controlled substances). Ability to perform basic controlled substance prescription processing as defined in vault competencies. Prepares and dispenses OTC medications and supplies. Performs clerical duties in support of the pharmacy including answering and responding to telephone calls from patients and others. Notifies appropriate provider regarding requests for prescriptions that need to be renewed via CPRS. Assists in updating allergies on medication profiles. Technical and clerical review related to prescription clarification. Opens and processes mail refill requests. Prepares individual or bulk quantities of suspensions, creams, and ointments that need to be compounded. Greets and assists patients as needed in the dispensing area of pharmacy. Hands out completed prescriptions following established procedure. Maintains efficient workflow through the development of appropriate criteria and priorities to ensure prompt processing of outpatient prescriptions. Works with the supervisor to assist in copay billing problems that may occur. Uses computer knowledge to help reset and remove copays when patients are service-connected and their status has been marked wrong or was recently been changed due to an increase in their eligibility. Maintains efficient workflow to ensure prompt processing of outpatient prescriptions for controlled substances. Acts as the controlled substance technician when needed and follows all the guidelines of that position description while performing that function. Fills Pyxis refill orders from inpatient wards. Orders must be entered and released from specific Pyxis perpetual inventory, logging lot number, expiration date, and quantities. Monitors distribution of controlled substances and investigates and attempts to solve discrepancies. Notifies supervisor of any inventory discrepancy immediately. Sets Up Prescriptions for Final Check. Obtains correct stock container, counts/pours correct amount of medication and places it in an appropriately sized container, labels and sets aside for final check by a pharmacist. Work Schedule: Based on the needs of the service (the specific tours of duty will be discussed during the interview). May require overtime work, shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
