| The incumbent is assigned to the Boise VA Medical Center as the Associate Chief of Staff for Research. Incumbent's major responsibilities include oversight and responsibility for all areas of biomedical and clinical research within the Boise VA Medical Center (BVAMC) as well as any research activities conducted by VA personnel employed by the BVAMC on VA time or with VA equipment, regardless of location of those activities. The Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development (ACOS for R&D) is a full time Executive Career field position and reports to the Medical Center Director through the Chief of Staff. The incumbent functions as the Director of the Research Service and formulates the goals and objectives of the research mission, both basic and clinical, of the Boise VA Medical Center. A major responsibility of this position is to expand research at BVAMC through recruitment of additional scientists with expertise in research relating to diseases common in the veteran population. The incumbent is responsible for developing and initiating policies, procedures, and organizational structures necessary to achieve those goals and objectives, and for planning, developing, and directing the complex scientific and administrative activities necessary to advance the research program. The incumbent has leadership responsibility of all administrative and budgetary operations of the research service and for the supervision and evaluation of research service personnel either directly or through subordinate supervisors. The incumbent is responsible for compliance with both VISN and VACO-mandated research policies, including those issued by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the Office of Research Oversight (ORO) which includes the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) as well as the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) program. A secondary purpose of the position is to act as a scientist, conducting independent work. Specifically, the incumbent: Administers the facility's Research and Development (R&D) programs, including operation of the R&D Committee and subcommittees. This encompasses expansion and submission of research proposals, accreditation maintenance, and resource and fiscal management of approved R&D funds and non-VA monies. Participates with the Medical Center's Executive Team in the management of the Medical Center's health care program ensuring that the integration of R&D programs provides beneficial impact on the delivery of quality and timely patient care. Provides advice, guidance, direction, and technical assistance to research investigators in the submission of research proposals and in conducting funded research. Consults with and assists other research investigators in the integration of theoretical concepts and applied research methods. Serves as the Medical Center's liaison to headquarters' Office of Research and Development to include submission of proposals, reports and correspondence pertinent to the R&D function and serving on special task forces or as contract supervisor when assigned Serves as principal investigator, co-investigator or program director on peer-review research programs and special research initiatives. Fosters initiation and development of new research protocols that include basic science and clinical studies proposals as well as the development of joint research ventures with the affiliating institutions. Provides advice and guidance in the development and submission of research manuscripts for publication and for presentation at national and international meetings. The physician will be board certified or board eligible. The physician will carry a caseload and provide consultation to other clinical programs in the Boise VA Healthcare system, community agencies who provide care to our veterans, and other clinicians within VISN 20 with whom we have established relationships for providing care for our veterans. The physician will need to be an effective communicator and team-player that collaborates with multiple disciplines within medical/behavioral/surgical specialties. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Financial Disclosure Report: Not required A Recruitment or Relocation Incentive may be approved for a highly qualified candidate. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
