Work Hours/Shift:

Full Time Evenings (2p-10:30p) and rotating weekends

You Will Be Responsible For:

• Verifies patient orders.
• Properly uses the scanner for positive patient identification 100% of the time.  Accurately identifies the patient using two hospital approved patient identifiers, name and DOB.
• Properly labels all specimens with the correct patient label at the patient’s bedside to assure accuracy of results.
• Demonstrates the ability to perform newborn screens and heel sticks meeting the requirements of the state of Florida guidelines and without rejection.
• Demonstrates the ability to perform blood cultures without reported contamination.  Sends cultures to lab within 1 hour.
• Accurately accessions in all specimens within the specified time frame
• Coordinates phlebotomy draws as required using collection lists.
• Places patient sample in the appropriate department for processing.
• Answers all pages/spectra link phones within 4 rings. If with a patient will call the accession room immediately when free.
• Greets employees, physicians and visitors professionally and pleasantly.
• Effectively answer phone calls from nursing units or physicians’ offices.
• Verifies that all specimen orders are received into LIS during log-in process
• Investigate non-routine physician orders to assure proper tests are ordered.
• Ensures the ordering of laboratory tests are completed accurately and in a timely manner for the delivery of results to the caregiver.
• Places patient sample in the appropriate department for processing, spinning specimens when indicated.
• Takes responsibility and performs clerical work utilizing independent judgment and initiative
• Maintains strict confidentiality of all information contained in or pertaining to patient lab results.
• Files all requisitions and send-out lab results accurately. Maintains files so they are always current and orderly.
• Performs work independently and demonstrates initiative to complete projects. Exercises independent judgment when communicating, whether in written form or verbally; maintains utmost confidentiality at all times.
• Identifies laboratory order or resulting problems, correct as necessary and contact involved entities with corrected action.
• Actively monitor collection inquiry list and the pending logs and resolve issues
• Accurately transcribes information into the LIS.
• Contacts patient and ordering entity if repeat testing is necessary.
• Answers phone calls from ordering entity and assist in obtaining answers to any questions they may have in regard to testing or results.
• Maintains failed fax log and follow up with ordering entities to ensure timely results.
• Process laboratory credit/charge to ensure correct patient billing.
• Scans patient lab orders into Cerner as needed.
• Contacts patient and ordering entity if repeat testing is necessary.
• Answers phone calls from ordering entity and assist in obtaining answers to any questions they may have regarding testing or results.
• Maintains failed fax log and follow up with ordering entities to ensure timely results.
• Process laboratory credit/charge to ensure correct patient billing.
• Coordinates phlebotomy draws as required using collection lists.

What You Will Need:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Phlebotomist experience
• AHA BLS-Certified

Job Summary:

Performs blood draws for accurate and timely Laboratory Testing.  Receives specimens into the laboratory accurately and in a timely manner. Coordinates the day to day phlebotomy operations of the laboratory into a comprehensive, centralized and efficient process for the laboratory departments. Accurately places laboratory orders for outpatient, urgent care, and industrial account customers to ensure that results are available to the caregiver in a timely manner. Fax patient results when required. Ensure that all Newborn Screen results are received from the Florida DOH State Lab. Scans in patient lab orders as needed.
